Ever used Linux before?

Post by Ravenfreak »

Have you ever used a Linux distro before? I've used Linux Mint as well as Lubuntu. I'm currently dual booting Lubuntu on my desktop. I plan on restoring one of my laptops and installing Linux on it sometime in the future. I need to get better at soldering because the sound card needs to be repaired. It's a HP pavilion gaming laptop from 2018.

I have used Ubuntu and Kali Linux in the past and I had a great experience with them. The dual booting can be a great way to have the best of both worlds all to yourself.

I'm now using Ubuntu on my main computer and dual booting with Windows instead. :) I like it a bit better than Lubuntu, but Lubuntu is just a lighter version of Ubuntu which is great for older computers.

You are absolutely right with your statement because dual booting gives flexibility and it makes it easier to use Linux for specific tasks especially for gaming. Kali Linux is interesting as I've had a lot of good things. It's a bits popular among security enthusiasts.

On a computer, I haven't, but I hope to try it soon. I use Linux on my servers though.

Linux is a very versatile OS and there are so many distros you can choose from. The good thing is that each of them has their own strength and if you are looking for a challenge, you could try installing Linux on an older machine.

You should it would make connecting to your website much easier! All you'd have to do is open up the shell with your host's ip address, and login information. I know there's already software such as Putty for Windows but on Linux you don't have to worry about that lol. I highly recommend giving Linux Mint a try since it's laid out similar to Windows.

That's great to know, thank you for telling me. I rarely use shell, but one of my buddies that shares my server with me uses shell. I mainly use cpanel though. I had an issue with my laptop the other day and it kept going to a blue screen from a Windows update. I managed to fix it, but if I have another problem with Windows, I'm definately making the switch!

How much memory does it use compared to Windows?

It depends on which distro you go with but Linux definitely doesn't use up as much memory as Windows 11 does. For Windows to run smoothly, you'd need at least 16 gigs of ram. Anything less will probably be a mess for it. I personally use Ubuntu, but there's a lightweight version called Lubuntu that uses even less resources. No matter which distro you go with, you always get the option to try it out before you install it.

I'll definately be looking into switching relatively soon, especially if I want this laptop to last longer than a few years. Windows can be quite annoying. I originally had 4gb of ram on this laptop, but i upgraded it to 16gb about a month ago. I had a lot of issues running things on 4gb, but it's something okay with 16gb now.
